What to bring to a notary: printable checklist
General guidance only, not legal advice. Requirements vary by state, location, and document; confirm with the notary and with whoever will receive the document.
- The complete document, unsigned. Don't sign until the notary tells you to.
- A current government-issued photo ID for every signer. Accepted IDs vary by location; check the listing.
- Every person who has to sign, in person.
- Witnesses, if your document or its recipient requires them (ask the recipient; many notaries do not supply witnesses).
- Any instructions from whoever will receive the document (which notarization they need).
- Payment, if the location charges a fee. Many of our listed options are free; see your city guide.
- Call ahead to confirm a notary is on duty and whether you need an appointment.
